If you’ve ever had one of my massages, you know how it always ends: a big glass of water and a strong reminder to continue to drink water throughout your day. Why? What’s so important about water? Let’s start at the beginning:

The most important glass of the day is first thing in the morning, because your muscles dehydrate when you’re sleeping. (Did you know your muscles are 70% water?) But even if that were not the case, I’d recommend it anyway because water benefits your body in so many ways, such as:

  • Boosting your metabolism
  • Lubricating your joints
  • Helping your kidneys
  • Aiding digestion and bowel function

If you don’t drink enough water, your overall health will decline. How much is enough? We suggest dividing your body weight by two, take that number and drink that many ounces of water  a day. For example, if you weighed 100 lbs, dividing by 2 equals 50. This person should drink 50 ounces of water a day. (see note at bottom of story for some smartphone apps that can help you track your daily water intake)

So that’s the basic background on why you should drink plenty of water. What does water have to do with massages? Plenty!

Drinking water before your massage helps hydrate your muscles so they’re easier to manipulate. Massage stimulates circulation and expresses water, salt, minerals, and toxins from your muscles. Drinking water after a massage flushes out the waste materials, which results in less muscle soreness and aching, and re-hydrates your muscles. The symptoms of muscle dehydration include:

  • muscle cramps
  • aches and pains
  • weakness and fatigue

Don’t reverse all the benefits of your massage by neglecting to properly hydrate your body and your muscles afterwards. So raise your glass of pure, clean water to keeping you healthy!

Water drops on a leafTo benefit you and your family’s overall health–not to mention the environment, we highly recommend less-toxic household cleaners. Particularly we suggest avoiding products with labels that read corrosive, flammable, reactive, poison, or toxic.

Here’s a great drain cleaner recipe that several of our staff use for regular maintenance to great effect:

  1. Pour 1/2 cup of baking soda into the drain
  2. Follow with 1/2 cup of white vinegar
  3. Cover tightly for 15 minutes, then flush it with boiling water.
  4. Repeat if necessary.

A mechanical snake may be needed to clear hair-clogged drains. If you have standing water, you may need to use a plunger or a snake to start.

As the weather heats up and we start spending more time outdoors, we often think about sunscreen to maintain the health of our skin.

It’s true if you intend to spend lots of time in the sun, you should use sunscreen–however, daily exposure to the sun for about 10 – 20 minutes, preferably between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. for the best UVB intensity, will cause your body to produce the vitamin D you need.

To avoid sun damage, only stay out without sunscreen long enough for your skin to turn slightly pink–after that you won’t produce any more vitamin D, and you’ll begin skin damage. Generally, the darker your skin the longer you’ll need to stay out.

But, what does vitamin D do, you ask? More than you’d think! It’s been shown to prevent or influence many conditions*, including:

An alternative to daily sun exposure is to take a vitamin D supplement. Most studies recommend taking 5,000 IU of vitamin D daily, or 35 IUs of vitamin D per pound of body weight. Not sure if you need a vitamin D supplement? Well, knowing the importance of vitamin D, Dr. Alavi includes that level in her standard lab tests.
